Recovery
What to expect — from day one to your final result.
A hair transplant is a process, not an event. Here's the honest, full timeline — including the shedding phase most clinics don't warn you about — so nothing comes as a surprise.
Day 0
Procedure day
Your 6–8 hour procedure under local anesthetic. You'll rest the evening; mild tightness or soreness is normal.
Days 1–3
Early healing
Sleep slightly elevated to limit swelling. Don't wash or touch the recipient area; protect it from bumps and sun. Tiny scabs form around each graft.
Days 4–7
First gentle wash
You begin gentle washing with a mild shampoo as instructed. Most people return to desk work around day 5–7. Any swelling settles.
Days 7–14
Scabs shed
The small scabs flake away and redness fades. The transplanted area looks tidier — though the new hairs are still short.
Weeks 2–4
Shedding (this is normal)
The transplanted hairs fall out — called 'shock loss.' Don't panic: the roots stay safely in place. This is an expected part of the cycle, not a failed graft.
Months 1–3
The quiet phase
Little visible change while the follicles rest and re-anchor. The hardest part is patience — the work is happening below the surface.
Months 3–4
New growth begins
Fine new hairs start to emerge from the transplanted follicles. Early growth can look thin and uneven — that's normal at this stage.
Months 6–9
Real density
Growth accelerates and thickens. By now most patients see a clear, noticeable difference and the hairline takes shape.
Months 12–18
Your final result
Hairs mature in thickness and texture and blend naturally. This is when you judge the result — the full, settled outcome.
Do
- Sleep with your head slightly elevated for the first few nights
- Wash gently and exactly as instructed, starting around day 4
- Keep the area out of direct sun for the first couple of weeks
- Stay hydrated and eat well — healing is biological
Don't
- Don't pick or scratch scabs — let them shed on their own
- No intense exercise, sweating, or swimming for ~2 weeks
- No smoking or alcohol while you heal (both slow recovery)
- Don't panic when the transplanted hair sheds — it's supposed to
